The DELF B1 (Diplôme d'Études en Langue Française) is the most sought-after French qualification in the world. Internationally recognised and valid for life, it certifies an intermediate level of French. The exam is made up of four parts: listening comprehension, reading comprehension, written production and spoken production. It is in the written production section that spelling plays a decisive role: this test, marked out of 25 points, assesses your ability to write a clear, coherent and grammatically correct text. Weak spelling can cost you the very points that separate success from failure.
The DELF B1 marking grid for written production awards specific points for "linguistic competence", which explicitly includes lexical and grammatical spelling. Examiners assess the accuracy of agreements (subject-verb, adjective-noun, past participle), command of conjugations (present, passé composé, imperfect, future, conditional), correct use of homophones and punctuation. A candidate who writes a well-structured text riddled with spelling mistakes will see their mark drop considerably. Conversely, careful spelling creates an impression of mastery that positively influences the overall grade.
