The B1 level of the CEFR is the threshold level, the one that marks the beginning of true linguistic autonomy. A B1 learner can understand the main points of clear, standard speech on familiar topics, cope with most situations encountered while travelling, produce simple and coherent text on familiar subjects, and describe an event, an experience or a dream. It is also the level required for French naturalisation and for many professional positions. In spelling, B1 is a decisive milestone: basic errors must be eliminated and the learner must begin to master the subtleties of written French.
The spelling challenges at B1 are considerable. Learners must master the imperfect tense and its endings (je mangeais, nous finissions), the present subjunctive in common expressions (il faut que je fasse, je veux qu'il vienne), and the agreement of the past participle with object pronouns (la lettre que j'ai écrite). Logical connectors (cependant, néanmoins, par conséquent) enrich vocabulary but introduce new spelling difficulties. French punctuation, with its spaces before colons and semicolons, differs from most other languages and must be internalised.
