The DELF B2 is the diploma that opens the doors to French universities and to many international careers. Required by almost every higher education institution in France, it certifies an advanced level of proficiency in French. The written production task of the DELF B2 is significantly more demanding than that of the B1: candidates must write an argumentative essay of at least 250 words, defending a position with structured arguments and precise vocabulary. At this level, spelling is no longer a bonus but a prerequisite: examiners expect high-quality written French, with few or no errors.
The DELF B2 written production is graded out of 25 points, and linguistic competence carries considerable weight. The criteria assess mastery of morphosyntax (agreements, conjugations, structure of complex sentences), the richness and precision of vocabulary, and spelling accuracy. An essay that is brilliant in substance but riddled with mistakes will be marked down severely. The most common pitfalls at this level are past participle agreements in complex constructions, the use of the subjunctive in concessive and purpose clauses, and confusion between paronyms such as « éminent » and « imminent » or « infliger » and « affliger ».
