The C1 level of the CEFR is the autonomous level, the first of the so-called "proficient" levels. A C1 learner can understand a wide range of long and demanding texts, express themselves spontaneously and fluently without searching too hard for words, use the language effectively and flexibly in their social, professional or academic life, and communicate on complex subjects clearly and in a well-structured way. In terms of spelling, C1 corresponds to a near-native level: mistakes should be exceptional, and the texts produced should reflect an elegant command of written French.
At this level, the spelling challenges are the very ones that even native French speakers encounter. The passé simple and its conjugations (il résolut, nous vînmes, ils acquirent) appear in literary texts and formal narratives. Past-participle agreements in the most complex cases (les efforts qu'il a fallu, les heures que la réunion a duré) require a thorough knowledge of the rules. The vocabulary includes rare or literary terms, neologisms and loanwords. A C1 learner must also master the typographical subtleties of French: capital letters in compound proper nouns, hyphens in numerals, the cedilla, the diaeresis, and the rules of the 1990 spelling reform.
