The A2 level of the CEFR marks an important stage in learning French: the learner moves beyond the discovery phase and enters the stage of linguistic survival. They can understand isolated sentences and frequently used expressions related to everyday areas of life: personal information, shopping, immediate surroundings, work. In spelling, A2 is the level where the basics must be consolidated and where the first automatic reflexes take hold. It is the moment to solidify what was learned at A1 while tackling more complex structures.
At the A2 level, spelling challenges become more varied. The learner starts using the passé composé and must handle the agreement of the past participle with the auxiliary être (elle est partie, ils sont arrivés). Grammatical homophones become a major issue: a/à, et/est, son/sont, on/ont. Vocabulary expands beyond immediate needs and includes longer words with double consonants (appartement, adresse, professeur) and various silent endings. The A2 learner also begins writing short texts (postcards, messages, forms) where spelling mistakes are more visible.
