The CEFR B2 level is the upper-intermediate level, also called the independent level. A B2 learner can understand the main ideas of concrete or abstract topics in a complex text, communicate with a degree of spontaneity and ease that makes regular interaction with native speakers possible, and express themselves clearly and in detail on a wide range of subjects. When it comes to spelling, B2 is the level at which mistakes become more subtle but also more costly: at this stage, a solid command of written French is expected, and every error stands out.
The spelling challenges of the B2 level touch on the finer points of the language. The subjunctive is used in more varied contexts (bien que, afin que, à moins que, pour peu que). Agreement of the past participle with reflexive verbs (elles se sont parlé vs elles se sont lavées) becomes a major issue. Vocabulary includes more formal terms and fine semantic distinctions: affect/effet, censé/sensé, davantage/d'avantage. A B2 learner must also master the sequence of tenses in complex sentences and the use of moods in subordinate clauses. Texts written at this level are judged on their accuracy as much as on their content.
